Duolingo introduced “Talk With Lily,” a new feature inside Duolingo Max that allows users to have live AI-powered conversations in another language. The product challenge was straightforward but difficult: show the value of a conversational AI experience in seconds, in a way that would both entertain and convert users to upgrade.
The solution relied entirely on motion craft.
Rather than presenting the feature through static UI demonstrations, we treated the interface and Lily herself as the performance. The animation became the storytelling engine. Conversational dialogue unfolded through kinetic type, fast-moving message threads, and expressive character reactions that captured Duolingo’s chaotic, self-aware brand voice.
Timing was everything. The first three seconds had to stop the scroll. Bold motion, sharp comedic beats, and exaggerated reactions created instant energy while still clearly communicating how the feature worked. Typography carried both the humor and the explanation, ensuring the work remained legible and effective in silent autoplay environments.
The pieces were designed entirely vertical and built for performance placements across social. To support scale, we developed a repeatable motion system that allowed the campaign to expand into multiple executions without losing rhythm or personality.
What made this work matter was the balance between entertainment and clarity. AI features can easily feel abstract or technical. Through motion design, the experience became tangible, playful, and immediate.
Instead of explaining the feature, the animation let viewers feel what it was like to use it. The result turned product education into character-driven spectacle and helped position Duolingo Max as a more immersive way to learn.
