The Fortnite Heartpack was created in partnership with Enduring Hearts - the only nonprofit solely dedicated to funding research that improves outcomes for children with advanced heart conditions.
It reimagined gaming’s “extra life” mechanic as an interactive educational experience inside Fortnite. As the first-ever charitable side quest on the platform, it transformed a familiar gameplay concept into something deeply meaningful. Inspired by real pediatric technology like the Berlin Heart, players assembled a mechanical heart backpack - learning how transplant devices work as they progressed.
Set within Super Pet World, the experience combined narrative storytelling, customization, and mission-based gameplay. Players met Alice, inspired by real transplant children, and completed guided challenges to unlock the Heartpack.
Designed to feel native to gaming culture, the project turned a universal symbol into a tool for understanding - connecting digital play to real-world impact. Amplified through creator livestreams, the initiative drove awareness, engagement, and donations for Enduring Hearts, demonstrating how gameplay can become a powerful platform for education and social good.
Launched over a single month during Heart Health Month, the initiative generated over 11.5 million earned impressions, and more than 173,000 plays.
