Lifesaving Radio is the world’s first artificial-intelligence-powered healthcare radio station, streaming on LifesavingRadio.com through Spotify.

Lifesaving Radio features over 30 hours of music clinically suited for peak surgical performance and was inspired by recent clinical research which found that listening to music from world-renowned rock band AC/DC can help surgical teams increase accuracy and efficiency.

Preventable surgical complications are the third leading cause of death worldwide. With 28-hour shifts and 24/7 on-call schedules, surgeons are some of the most stressed and burned out healthcare professionals in the world, which has been clinically shown to have an impact on surgical performance. Improving surgical performance can help save millions of lives and billions in healthcare costs. And we know that music is played in most of the 313 million annual surgeries. So, what if we could create a personalized, performance-enhancing OR audio experience to help surgical teams operate at peak performance? To do that, we utilized clinical data and AI in hospitals like never before.

We started with a clinical study that showed hard rock music, namely AC/DC, improved surgical accuracy and efficiency––but not just any rock or AC/DC playlist works. That’s why we created AI Angus, the first AI DJ specifically trained to optimize surgical performance. Using the metrics of the music from the study, including BPM, key, camelot, loudness, energy, valence, speechiness, popularity, and duration, we analyzed millions of songs to identify the music clinically suited for peak surgical performance.

Lifesaving Radio launched at NextMed Health’s medical innovators congress with surgical demos, world tour rock scrubs, and Highway to Heal, an album of 11 reimagined AC/DC songs, each telling a different surgical story––and we even made limited edition scrub-colored vinyl.

In just a few weeks:

  • 5,887 surgeons subscribed in 20+ countries

  • 29,435 hours of performance-enhancing music streamed

  • 41% more efficient surgeries

  • 5% higher accuracy

  • 1 billion press and social media impressions earned

To create the foundation of the art and branding for Lifesaving Radio and the album, Highway to Heal, we combined AC/DC’s iconic high voltage lightning bolt with the most recognizable instrument used by surgeons to make our own iconic image: a high voltage scalpel bolt to power peak surgical performance. The scalpel bolt functions as the letter “S” in the Lifesaving Radio logo to convey the lifesaving power of music in a surgical setting. And not only does the scalpel bolt grace the cover of the album, Highway to Heal, the single art for each song also revolves around it, putting a medical twist on rock motifs to reflect the surgical stories told in the lyrics. Finally, we tied it all together with a color palette based on the scrubs worn by surgical teams as they save lives in the OR.
