The Sound of Matra

information

A sound experiment that transforms the Black Noise Festival’s location, Matra Mountain, into a series of sound waves never heard before.

How?

We’ve divided the exact 3D map of Matra Mountain into slices to convert the obtained topographical textures into waveforms. As a result, the musical map of the mountain (20-piece sound package) was created as a wavetable-based oscillator in collaboration with Swedish Kilohearts using their music design software, Phase Plant. It is available for free worldwide to compose songs.

Black Noise Festival has emerged as one of the country’s most influential genre-specific underground music festivals going against the dominance of big players. It hosts all kinds of niche subculture artists from the region who are not featured in major events at all. We wanted to keep this local spirit alive and promote the underground festival further to a broader regional audience.

We came up with an experimental campaign targeting the niche community of the festival. We’ve converted the 3D topographical map of Matra into waveforms, resulting the musical map of the mountain in collaboration with Swedish Kilohearts using their music design software, Phase Plant. Including 20-piece sound package, available for free world-wide to compose songs. Each represents and is named after an actual location.

As a social promotional campaign, we’ve invited local and regional bands performing at the festival to create their own festival edition songs based on the patches.

Black Noise Festival hosts niche subculture artists missing from the bill of major festivals. We wanted to keep this local spirit alive. Most alternative music blogs and cultural magazines reviewed the campaign. Fans of the festival and its performers also joined the choir on social media. We also set off a competition for the best composers to win festival tickets and experience the real Black Noise at the festival. The niche community praised it, extending the festival by one day. People came from all over the region.

Black Noise Festival has emerged as one of the country’s most influential genre-specific underground music festivals going against the dominance of big players. It hosts niche subculture artists missing from the bill of major festivals. Fans of this niche music genre always look for a place where they can truly embrace it. The almost-hidden atmospheric location, in the deep forest of Mátra mountain is a perfect spot for these people to break away and enjoy the dark vibes. That’s the local spirit we wanted to keep alive by giving an uncommon sound experiment to experience the real Black Noise.
