The 2023 Seattle Storm were staring down a rough year. We needed to help fans get to know a new wave of players and set them up for success. We created a “passing of the torch” spot to begin the season, using the resurgent interest in Tarot cards and Sue Bird as the fortune teller to make a bold prediction for the upcoming season—and communicate how the Storm was rising.
The Storm entered the season with the odds stacked against them.
All time legend Sue Bird was retiring, and former MVP Breanna Stewart took her talents to New York. It had all the makings of a rebuilding year.
But we still needed to put butts in seats.
We had to get Seattle hyped for what’s next.
By connecting the past with the present, we gave fans a reasons to believe in the where the team was headed. And they got there.
Fans continued to fill Climate Pledge Arena. Jewell Loyd (The Star) set the all-time WNBA scoring record. Ezi Macbegor (Strength) made her first All-Star Game. And the team contended for a playoff berth.
The Storm have a history of success—they’ve won the WNBA Championship four times. Fan expectation is high in a city with many competing entertainment options.
We created the Tarot cards used in the spot (and the rest of the campaign) with AI. We had limited access to the players.
