We revitalized the Miller Foundation’s website to streamline the grant application process, enhance navigability, and strengthen the brand voice and presentation. Our user-centric design supports Oregon’s arts and education sectors, significantly improving accessibility, comprehension, and the visual representation of the Foundation’s brand. Initially limited to a logo, colors, and fonts, we creatively expanded the brand elements to infuse the site with a fun, warm, and exciting energy.

Our challenge was the transformation of a complex, DIY website that complicated the understanding of eligibility and application for grants. Our objective was to create a seamless, intuitive user experience that minimized the need for staff intervention while better representing the Foundation’s mission.

We began with developing personas and mapping user journeys to inform the redesign, simplifying language and structure for clarity and ease of use. Additionally, we conducted brand voice workshops to deeply understand and articulate the Foundation's purpose and strategic vision, which led to a clear brand message and positioning. This comprehensive approach resulted in a website that not only improved user comprehension and navigation independence but also perfectly encapsulated the Foundation’s ethos.

In the philanthropic sector, the approach to self-representation varies significantly. While some organizations position themselves as community leaders, the Miller Foundation chooses a more understated role to highlight their grantees. At the same time, the Foundation wanted potential grantees to “see themselves” in the energy of the presentation. This nuanced understanding of the Foundation's cultural stance was pivotal in refining their brand vision and voice, presenting a unique challenge that we successfully navigated in our design strategy.
